This summer, Sarah Peterson (SMBHC 21) was accepted into Washington University Medical School’s highly competitive program called Biomedical research apprenticeship program. She spent 10 weeks working in a lab and taking graduate school preparatory classes. The lab Sarah worked in studied graft versus host disease, which is a complication from bone marrow transplants. Sarah and her summer colleagues found a drug that can completely prevent and reverse the disease. Sarah’s final presentation, “Baricitinib not only prevents but also treats GvHD by promoting damaged tissue repair after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation,” showcased the research she and her colleagues collected.
