Faculty Summer Stipends

20/20 in 2020

The year 2020 is right around the corner.  We need visionaries who can focus on what is true and what is important.  We need insights.  We need citizen scholars whose vision for the future is 20/20.  We need new honors courses.

And so, we are announcing a competition for Faculty Summer Stipends to support faculty in designing honors coursework that will help our students reach 20/20 in 2020.  Name some of the concerns, questions, opportunities, or pathways that keep you awake at night as you consider what’s ahead, whether the view is magnificent or terrifying or simply puzzling.  Design a course whose pedagogy and subject matter demand the intellectual courage to look deeply into one of the big issues of our time. What do you yourself see so vividly that you can’t look away?  What do you wish you could see more clearly?  What vision gives you hope when others are despondent?  There’s your course.  Tell us how you’d teach it.

By March 19th, send your proposal to honors@olemiss.edu.  Guidelines are available here.

We will select a number of those proposals to support with a summer stipend of $5,000 for course development during summer 2018.  We will work with those faculty proposers and their department chairs to determine when the new courses will be offered over the next two Academic Years.

We will award as many stipends as possible, and to as wide a range of faculty-driven concerns and approaches as we can manage.  We are eager to see what you see.  If you have questions or want to kick around ideas, please contact Dean Douglass Sullivan-González, at dsg@olemiss.edu.
