In fall 2016, the SMBHC hosts columnist David Brooks as our Fall Honors Convocation Speaker, and we celebrate the investiture of Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter. To tap into the synergy of that moment, and to honor the official beginning of Chancellor Vitter’s era, we inaugurate a new model for deep conversations, a series of events we designate “From the Edge of Inside,” summoning Mr. Brooks’ extraordinary vision of the potential change agents who “are within the organization, but . . . not subsumed by the group think.” A person standing thoughtfully at the edge of inside, Brooks says, “can be the strongest reformer. This person has the loyalty of a faithful insider, but the judgment of the critical outsider.” (“At the Edge of Inside,” NY Times, 24 June 2016). The events “From the Edge of Inside” might be free-wheeling faculty- or student-led conversations in our Honors lounge; or mini-concerts that call attention to quiet or racket and explore the nature of beauty; or a panel probing a divisive topic. We welcome your suggestions for topics and formats you would like to offer or coordinate. Join us “From the Edge of Inside” as we initiate a new conversational model for Honors and the University of Mississippi.
